Default Need advice for 1886 F150 4X2 XLT Lariat

Just aquired a 1986 F150 XLT Lariat 4X2. Needs tons of work. I'm eager to start. I need some advice on a new motor. I want something that will last. I want some decent power, but dont want to break the bank. What should I throw into it?

I'd test drive a 4.9L six, a 5.0L & a 5.8L to see what power level suits you. I have the 4.9L six cyl & am pleased. It's not a speed demon by any stretch of the imagination, but it pulls well and is ultra reliable. It doesn't have a timing chain, but has timing gears. As well, UPS used to use them in all their gasoline motors before their switch to diesel.

1986 was a one time motor set up only for the EFI so if u have the EFI your going to have to stick with a 86 set up for the intake and what not.

I believe only the 5.0 was fuel injected in '86, the others were still carbureted. It was some weird form of electronically controlled carburetor though.
