Have a 2008 150 right now but am trying to sell it because next year my financial situation is gonna be drastically different and don't want a big vehicle payment. I want a 70s f-series. Most likely f150 because i have found a few with what I want. I want a 460 with the 4 speed. He's my question. If I can't get both what should I sacrifice and swap in later. To me the engine would be easier to swap but if I have to change the tranni to match up with the 460 then I might as well get the 460 and do a manual swap. Also when looking through these vehicles anything I should really look at. They seem to be really tuff trucks but they are old. Thank for your help. Also since I have your attention. What year did power steering start. I have been told it was 78.

As for ps, i dont know.
Why a 460? Not trying to discourage your choice im just wondering. Personally a carbed sb with a zf 5spd is my current desire in my 86. I love my 300. Probably keep it. The 5spd will let me flex that low end torque but will also let me get 18mpg. That 460 eill kill you at the pump. Especially as a dd.

It's all about potential. My wife and I have a Toyota yaris for a dd and commuter. I want as big as possible I also plan to get a first gen cummins in the next couple years too if possible. I used to have an 86 f250 with the 5.0. It was slow but I loved every rusted beat up inch of that truck. Miss it to this day.

You can buy a truck with a 400 in it then later on put a 460 in. They have the same bell housing pattern so it will be an easy swap

Then you need to lay out a plan. With a 40 year old frame id really try a 250/350 truck. Your looking at alot of weight and alot of power potential. I am assuming you want a 4x4. For a 150 and that engine you will have to rebuild the stock axles way stronger. May aswell start strong. For a 2wd you will want a currie or similar 9" rear axle with gussets. Either way if you start with a 150 plan on boxing the frame.

The frame I will reinforce and I have an 89 250 with the idi that's missing the transmissions so I'm thinking about pulling the axles housings and everything I can off that and putting it in mine. It's got a d80 rear and d60 front. I'm gonna pull the axles also and see if I can make them work. I would like to even use the from off it but that's another plan story and idk if it's possible. I would prefer and 250 or 350 but it's about what I can find and get. Ya know.

That's good to know. Motor mounts close? I think I read somewhere they were all about the same block from the 351 engine series. Is this also correct? That's what I'm really thinking about doing so I can get the 250 or 350.

The 385 series motor mounts are different than the 351/400 mounts. Places like jegs and summit sell mounts for 429/460 to fit into 400 towers. I used jegs when I did my engine swap.

I forgot to mention those jegs mounts were like $80 after shipping.
