Default How to change rear differential fluid ?.

Hello all. I wanted to ask if there is any way to change the rear differential fluid on my 1982 f-150 4x4 302 V8 with out removing the drive shaft ?. The only way i can see is to remove the drive shaft because all my bolts are on the drive shaft side the back side is smooth no bolts to remove ?. There is a allem key plug on the drivers side of the pumpkin half way up. Is this the fill hole ?, if so , there is no drain hole only that hole ?. I was going to remove the diff cover but in my case i would have to remove the drive shaft, way too much trouble to change the fluid ? ,I could just open the thata allen plug on the pumpkin and maybe just add fluid but i wanted to completely change the fluid with out removing the drive shaft etc. Any thing i am over looking here ?. Thank you.

Yes the "Allen" (should be a 3/8 or 1/2 in drive) is the fill port. sometimes you can get the bolt at 6:00 to act as a drain if it was taped all the way through, if it was not then you have to open the pumpkin to drain it.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the response !. I bought a hand pump and i will use the fill hole(allen) and pump out the old and pump in the new oil and call it done. I would have liked to clean the gears out really good but to do that i would have to remove the drive shaft because the bolts to remove pumpkin cover are on the drive shaft side so that's not happening. A drain and fill will make a big difference i'm sure.

In case you did not know full is when you have gear oil coming out of the fill hole across the threads in a slow trickle.

Which rear differential ?

Unless it's a Ford 9"...It should have a serviceable cover.

It is a ford 9" as the bolt holes are on the drive shaft side and not on the rear side , so i will pump the fluid out and pump in some full synthetic till it drips out the access hole.

The driveshaft is not difficult to remove... just 4 small nuts around the U joint and you're done.

3rd member. Easier to understand. It's your whole carrier assembly for the gears. Check the bottom for an Allen plug as well. Might have dirt/crud built up. My 75 was old style with no drain. Had to remove the 3rd member to properly clean it and drill a drain location. Might be worth it to pull it and put a drain plug in yourself. Makes things easier. You'll have to pull your axles to remove the third member though. Not too bad, but oil gets everywhere.
