Please state engine and model year....
Not sure exactly what you asking but if I understand you correctly:
Your fuel gauge is not working and you want to try and connect a different gauge of some sort...

First you must understand that if you have an EFI engine then there are 2 fuel pumps. (3 if you have dual tanks). A low pressure pump in the tank(s) and a high pressure pump on the frame rail. All must be operational.

Even though the in-tank pump is attached to the frame of the sender unit, it has nothing to do with the fuel gauge reading. The pump and fuel gauge (sender) circuits are completely independent.

You can buy aftermarket fuel gauges. But first I would determine if the sender and associated wiring is working. You can use the OHMS function of a multimeter to test. Disconnect the tank connector and measure at the sender terminals on the tank. For '86 and before models you should measure ~73 Ohms empty and about 10 Ohms full. Of course somewhere in-between for different levels of fuel.
If that is working and the fuel gauge is not then you need to look for open or shorted wiring in-between or a bad tank switch if you have dual tanks.

Here is one example of an aftermarket fuel gauge:
