$425 from parts stores and mechanic.. Really?? $186 on cheapcarburetors.com but waiting on answer from mechanic about compatibility on electric choke.. I'm really not trying to spend $550 on a carb but I'm getting 8 mpg city and 12 hwy not ok with gas prices not at all so... Anyone have any suggestions??!!

IIRC your 86 has a computer controlled carb. When these systems worked they would deliver very good fuel economy but after 25+ years few of them work well. The feed back system was only used for a few years before Ford went Multiport EFI in 87. Many users have replaced the feed back carb with an earlier model and changed the ignition and distributer to a DSII. Its not hard, there are many write ups, and its more reliable and simple system. Depending on the gears, weight, transmission, and driving habits your 86 should be seeing at least 17-18 Hwy and 12 city.
YMMV
