Default 300 inline 6 cold start

I have a 1985 f150 300 inline 6 granny 4 speed. Its a good running truck with tons of power but it takes 5-10 minutes to warm up in the summer and 15-20 in winter. If i dont let it warm up it bogs out an dies when i try to pull out. I know the carburated 300's are known for being cold natured but does anybody have any ideas on how to speed it up? Im a on call voulenteer fire fighter so sometimes i dont have 5-10 minutes to sit an wait for the truck to warm. Thanks

1st check and make sure when you hit the throttle before startup the choke fully closes. When closed it should look completely shut.

2nd check your timing. It should be set at a base 10*.

3rd while its running cold spray carb cleaner around vac lines, ports, carb base,... If the engine speed picks up in a specific place you have a vac leak putting too much air into your intake negating the choke.

Also while its running look down in the carb at the fuel. You really should barely make out the fuel spray. If you see drops or a thick heavy stream it could be time to get the carb rebuilt.

I know that LMC truck has an engine block heater for colder areas but i don't live in a place that i would need one. I don't know how they mount up or if they even work but LMC has it for $22 and according to the description is better for your truck over time

Where i live it got down to -15 this past winter. My truck was always a 2 pump starter. If he is having trouble in july its not needing a heater. Id just about guarantee its a carb issue.
