Default 1986 Engine swap 351W

Help, had to swap a different motor into my sons 1986F150 4X4, old motor a 300 six was old and tired and then thru a rod....

We bought a prts 1986 truck with a 302 (we were told) and when we pulled it to install into our truck, it turned out to be a 351W out of a 1969 Torino/Fairlane (according to the block codes) Got it running but having problms with timing.

The water pump inlet is on the right side, right in front of the timing pointer. It looks like the timing cover was replaced with one off a 1974 302 (according to the wrecking yard writing on the timing cover).

So, can I move the pointer to the 10oclock position? And then do I have to put a different harmonic balancer on, from a differnt year? I am at a loss right now - help

Thanks for the reply, but don't understand your answer. We put a new timing chain on the motor whe we had it out.

How do set the timing if the pointer is hidden behind the water pump outlet? Do I move the pointer to the other side of the harmonic balancer? If I move it wont it be not aligned up to the timing marks?

That's what I meant.. So your question is why did ford put the water pump in front of the timing mark? Do you have the right water pump? My falcon had the same problem we ended setting the timing by ear and was able to get it pretty close.

69 motors originally had the water pump inlet on the pass side and if it still has the 69 balancer and pointer with the 74 cover a 70 and up balancer and timing pointer will be needed.
