Wouldt that make it not crank or anything? Had that go bad in my old 88 ranger and you couldn't crank it at all. Idk if it would do same thing to a older truck or not

Mine went out on my 77 last week. It would turn from the solenoid. Not the key though

back firing is a timing issue. You said you had it on top dead center, but what stroke were you on? Need to be sure you are on compression stroke at TDC and not on exhaust stroke. You could be 180 degrees off on your timing. You could have a couple plug wires crossed, either at your distributor or at your plugs. Another thing it is easy to get your timing chain off one tooth either on the cam sprocket or the crank gear. Timing marks have to be lined up perfect.

The timing is dead on at the cam sprocket and crank gear and made sure it was several times befor puting the timing cover back on.. Wires are correct have flipped distributer and when I do it doesn't back fire or anything just spins doesn't even attempt to start. When it backfires for a few seconds sounds like it will but doesn't

hummm....possible you might have distributor gear a tooth off. Make sure rotor button is pointing to number 1 plug wire in distributor cap when number 1 piston is TDC on compression stroke
