Default 1979 Dash Color

Hi All,
I just purchased my dream truck, a '79 F150 short box 4X4 (mid-life crisis) and while the truck is fully restored, there are some details that need to be addressed to make it right. I will be working on the interior first, and seem to remember that Ford used a different type of paint on the dash in '78 and '79. It was flatter for sure, and I don't remember if it was textured or had some metallic in it. I know the dashes during these years came in many colors but I would like to paint mine black as I remember seeing red F150's with black dashes. Does anyone know what type of paint was used?

First off beautiful truck and to find the exact paint id call Ford or find another dash from a junkyard or from a parts truck I've got an 85
What I did was just buy cheap spray paint from Walmart its cheap and it made my interior look 10x better than before

Good luck

Wow, beautiful truck. I believe it was a semi gloss if you really care about it that much. If you are trying to keep it numbers matching and all as a resto then I would definitely go with Ford and find the factory color. Mine is black and I removed the trim and painted it Ford Blue (even around the vents) and man it set off the interior pretty nicely. I say make it the color you want, you can always buy new dash trim and paint it with period correct FoMoCo factory paint

Its too bad we haven't heard from the newby's first post back in July of 2011. Our loss as to his input.

Default Sorry for the lapse ...

Hi All,
I got busy last fall/winter at work. I had an extended break over Christmas and have done some work on the truck - new thread posted.

When I posted this thread under the title 'dash color' I should have been more specific. Ford used a matt finish on their dashes in '78 and '79 - regardless of the color. Also, there almost seemed to be some metallic flake in there as well. I was wondering if anyone noted this or had repainted their dash to the original color and what type of paint it was?

My truck was restored and the dash was painted the high gloss body color. I might just leave it as it looks good the way it is.
