I'm coming from a Ram 1500 Hemi, considering ordering a Supercrew XL HDPP with 3.5 ecoboost. I would love to get some feedback from people who have downgraded from a higher set of features to an XL. Did you end up missing them in the long run? I'll lose a few of the creature comforts I had with the Ram (heated seats/steering wheel, auto climate control, some safety features, etc) but gain payload and towing capacity for towing purposes (towing a 6,000 GVWR travel trailer).
And for those with HDPP trucks, what did your actual payload end up being?
I do have a quote already from a dealer for an XL HDPP order at just over invoice.
I took delivery of my XL HDPP. I love it but I will admit that my needs were based on price and payload over anything so I was willing to live without an XLT trim and better options.
I also feel that if those are options you have, it is ok to want them in your next car and they will be missed. I am coming from a 2014 Chevy Traverse base model so I had a power seat and that is all that I gave up, but I miss it even though I rarely readjust the seat from my wife.
Can you find a 2022 XLT HDPP anywhere on a lot? I know it will be expensive and hard to find but my be the perfect option.
I too wanted the HDDPP, for 2023 it is only available on the XL, obviously missing features that a ram big horn has, as well as ride quality, but towing and payload can't be beaten.
It’s a shame Ford went away from HDPP on Lariats, and an absolute crime for removing it as an option for the XLT trim. I can’t say enough about my 21 XLT HDPP build. I optioned my truck pretty heavily and still came up with over 2300# payload.
Unfortunately I don’t have any experience with your original question since I have a XLT (which was a fairly big upgrade from my 17 Taco SR5), but I’ve been very happy with the capability of the 3.5EB coupled with the HDPP. If you have questions about performance, I should be able to help. I currently tow my 29ft, 7500# GVWR travel trailer without issue, and have helped my buddy with his 10,000# catamaran a time or two. Solid all around.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the updated SD? I know HDPP F150s are unicorns and maybe Ford wants more F250s instead of the niche group of HDPP owners. I will also say when I said I had a base build, it’s base for towing really. The HDPP option is expensive and I did get 4x4 along with the 360 degree camera and tow tech package with tow mirrors.

It certainly feels like that’s the case given the timing. I seriously considered a 250, but I didn’t want the diesel or the big V8 gasser as my daily driver just yet. Once I upgrade to a fifth-wheel, I’ll jump to the 350 SRW, but for now, with what I have and how I drive, the XLT F150 HDPP is perfect (except the terrible halogen headlights, which are being swapped out with some AlphaRex LUXX’s soon)
I have a 20 XLT HDPP pretty well optioned out and my payload is just over 2,500lbs. With you getting an xl it should be a little better.
With all of the base features and features available in the 23 a XL F150 isn't that bad. Even before they released the 23 info I would of ordered a XL instead of a XLT if both options were available.

Do you really need the HDPP for towing a camper that "light"?? As long as you stay away from a Powerboost, the 3.5EB and 5.0 will give you a payload north of 1700 in XLT trim.

I downgraded from a 2019 F150 XLT 2.7 Ecoboost supercrew 4x4 302a sport to a 2021 F150 XL 3.3L Regular cab 4x2 101a.
My biggest motovation was that I felt like I spent money on a ton of things I dont need. Kids are grown and out, so no need for a back seat. I drove 2wd trucks most of my life through tough north east winters with a little common sense, a set of good tires and some weight in the bed, so I didnt need the 4wd.
The must haves for me were : Power windows/locks, keyless entry remote start and a door keypad. I had to add the keypad myself of which was easy. I also had to add the remote start from the fob (It will start by my phone), and that was easy, but keyless entry from the factory was required for that to be added. I also need the rear locker for when I go mildly off road for hunting season, or pull the boat out of the water.
All the other must haves are standard.
In going to my 2021, I picked one off the lot. If I were to order one, it probably would have been a 2.7. But I have no regrets with the 3.3.
I missed a big bed on my 2019 for many reasons, so the full size bed on the 2021 is a huge plus for me.
The vinyl seats warm up quick with remote start of which I use every day in the winter. So I do not miss heated seats at all.
I got kind of lucky on my trade in. I got almost all my money back. And even got them down $1500 off sticker on the 2021. I also got 0% financing which I havent seen since then.
I bought the truck with steel wheels. I knew I was going to dress this truck out to make it more of my liking. I found a set of F150 sport rims with BFG tires, threw on a tonneu cover and back rack. Some F150 bold decals on the tailgate, running boards and its just how I like it now.
If I were to order a truck, I would probably order it with steel wheels again cause I dont like the XL aluminum rims. I would much rather patiently wait and search out someone who had a XLT sport or Lariat that was selling their factory rims.
I have no regrets. And the ownership cost of this truck versus the last one is wonderful.
