What is the Real Purpose...
Of the fiber shield or others have called it "Diaper'' ? Are the bean counters cheaping out? Couldn't this be made out of formed plastic or .090 aluminum sheet On my 2022 f150 4x4 scab
It offers mild protection from debris taking out an electrical connector or other sensitive stuff.
It was said to act as a sound deadener. It is offered just on higher trims to make the passenger comfort just a touch better at preventing sound from reverberating off the ground.
I really dislike the phrase "bean counters" especially when a person places blame for a thing they aren't even sure about.
The main focus by the Ford design team was sound deadening. A metal plate would be less effective at damping sound.
Diaper is something made up by the internet people.

A diaper is actually a containment device....something to prevent a fluid or otherwise from dropping on the ground and creating a hazard during a mechanical failure so it's usage in this context is a misnomer. A lot of racing series require these to be installed to reduce the amount of work/time it took during track cleanup when someone blows up their stuff.
Ever have a plastic grocery bag get caught on a exhaust, it stinks for weeks
