Website used to find trucks
Car GURU was the site that made my purchase possible.
It was the only site that I found that allowed me to efficiently/accurately search and find a XLT truck with adaptive cruise control. You can actually search this site for specific features vs trim vs color vs 4x2/4x4 vs engine vs wheelbase vs etc...
I'm sure you have realized by now that this is not possible via ford.com

It should do a nationwide search, but no. .
I have been using the FORD.COM build-a-car web site for awhile now, and it can be helpful. Unfortunately, it is hopelessly inaccurate. It sometimes flags the search results with "Dealer Ordered" or "Just Arrived," but when I contact the dealership, they often can't find it at all, even with the VIN from the website. Conversely, dealers often have similar vehicles on the lot that did not show up at all in the web search. Part of it seems to be confused by special orders intermingled with regular dealer orders.
I did find that you can increase the search range from the maximum of 100 miles by editing the search text directly in the browser, and that has helped at times. For example, you can change the Radius in ".../f150/results?zipcode=85392&Radius=100&modeltrim=..." from 100 to 200, and it will pick up more dealers in a big metropolitan areas.
Maybe the most handy feature on the Ford.com website is the "View Window Sticker" option, which seems to be the most accurate way to see detail information about a specific truck. Dealer websites are notoriously inaccurate, often making glaring errors on huge details such as engine type.
Some dealers won't even admit that they have a special order truck in house while they are prepping it for the customer. Others have been a little more accommodating, and will allow you to at least look at a truck that is already sold, although of course you can't drive it. I wouldn't want anyone driving my new truck, either.
I am past the idea of finding a suitable truck in any dealer inventory, and will soon be submitting a special order.

You didn't say where you were located.
ETA - It works but you have to massage is to get what you want. For example, on your truck you said that you didn't want chrome so instead of clicking on each window sticker just look at the pictures and if the front bumper has chrome, go to the next truck. There were about 15 trucks in my 500 mile radius that matched the other specs but only 2 didn't have chrome. When I was looking for my truck I tried cars.com and talking to the dealership. Both were useless because I couldn't filter for the features I wanted like 6.5' bed, interior work surface, and no pano roof. But, I figured out that if I looked at the pictures on the ford site I could tell if it had a 6.5' bed and no pano roof. Then it was just a matter of going thru the window stickers on the ones I liked. Ford wasn't motivated to help because they knew it was going to be hard to do a dealer transfer 500+ miles away.
