under the rubber mat in the storage area for the gear selector, there’s a tab like there would be for a battery compartment on a remote. I can’t get it open and it’s eating me up to know what it is

I can't be positive, but I think I might have once upon a time read or heard that the location was for putting your key fob into so you can start your truck and use it if/when the key fob battery totally died on you. That way you weren't stranded somewhere far from home (or a place that sells replacement batteries).
