Default Starting Payload by Trim without HDPP

My apologies in advance as I spent some time searching for existing threads but could not seem to land on what I am looking for. Never sure if I get the search terms right or what.

I'm new to this world and estimating my payload and towing needs for a possible order.

Using the F150 Towing Guide from Ford: https://www.ford.com/cmslibs/content...Info_Oct20.pdf

Also found the PDF documentation on this forum as to what weights some of the options I'm considering weigh (36 gal fuel tank, trailer tow package, bedliner etc).

My issue is what "starting" payload do I use for the truck? In the Ford towing guide, they list "available max payload", and I'm looking mostly at the 5.0L V8. Max Payload is listed at 3325. But in the fine print this is a 4x2, 8' bed, regular cab and max tow + HDPP. I KNOW this is nowhere near the configuration I'd be ordering.

If I visit the website from Ford: https://www.ford.com/trucks/towing-g...wingCalc-f-150 And I enter in my guestimated order truck (F150 Crew Cab, 5.5' bed, V8, XL, 4x4) I get a Total Payload of 2135 lbs. On that same options weights PDF it lists all the trim weights and payloads and that one also shows 2135 for the crew cab 4x4 V8 short bed. It does not appear to require the HDPP in any footnotes to reach 2135lbs, but it doesn't make clear if this does or does not include HDPP (or any tow packages). Part of me also assumes that it does NOT, as it is my understanding that you can't even order the HDPP on the short bed crew cab, correct? And if I look down the chart at the same configuration but with 6.5' bed....now the payload capacities are footnoted that "includes HDPP".

Am I OK to assume my starting payload will be 2135 on this configuration? Then subtract my option weights from there? If I add up everything I might order I think I'm around 350lbs of stuff. Lets just make it 400lbs. 1735 remaining payload.

And I suppose while I'm asking, XL or XLT with little in options with a 7000lb GVWR enclosed tandem-axle cargo trailer hauling I think MAX 5000lbs (weight of trailer plus contents).... I should be totally fine on payload for that, yeah? 500-750lbs tongue weight. I'm 200lbs. Will mostly be me or maybe 1 other person in truck when towing. 750 tongue max + 200 (me) + 250 (lets assume they're bigger person) = 1200lbs. Would still have over 500lbs spare payload at that point. Am I in the ballpark here?

A 4x4 XLT that is not HDPP will probably come in around 1800lb payload.

You noted the documents having footnotes and that you aren't buying the footnoted truck.
Available max payload means exactly like the footnote, purchased the lights and least optioned truck to find the truck the brochures tell you has the best payload. Nobody buys that truck though. Well a few do but they purchased it explicitly for towing, not for creature-comforts.

Your 7000 lb trailer will be in a good weight range for the truck you listed to order. If you plan to get a larger RV after the truck, you may be surprised that you shouldn't be shopping for much more than an 8,000lb RV. Give or take but don't go around thinking the 11,000 luxury trailer is in your future.

My XLT payload is 1845 with the max tow option (non HDPP). I have a 7000# trailer and it pulls it just fine... however, if I were to upgrade and get a bigger trailer/5th wheel over 8000#, I would move up to a F250. Having that much weight and height behind a 150 regardless of extra payload is starting to ask for trouble. Now add in wind and forget it.

I know my '21 XL super crew 4x4 with the 5.0 is like right at 2000 lbs. But that's an XL, vinyl floors, etc.

Great, I think I'm in acceptable estimated ballpark range! Appreciate it!

Just FYI, the attached resource may be of interest, lots of info about base GVWR and Payload for different trim-level/engine/body combinations with additional data for calculating the impact of options. FWIW I used this to estimate the payload for my 2022 Lariat with options as and when ordered, the delivered truck sticker rating came in at ~100# higher than the estimate (tip - an Excel spreadsheet is useful for compiling the data of interest and calculating outcomes).

Go to pages 16,17, and 18 of the document referenced by "Fiver" above. The tables on those pages tell you exactly what the Max Payload is for every base truck configuration.
