I am not afraid to do this myself.
Amazon Amazon

Is this the proper adapter? do I need to buy software on top of it?

There is a probably another thread for this sorry for asking to have you redirect me there.

Yes, that's the proper tool. The first post on the thread below will tell you everything you need to know:

https://www.f150gen14.com/forum/thre...ing-fdrs.8249/

If you do not have an account on that forum, I suggest you get one. There are many VERY knowledgeable and helpful people on that thread that will help you through the process. I suggest once you get your FDRS license, you post a screenshot there of all the modules you have pending updates and ask for advise about what order you should do them in. It looks intimidating, but it's really not difficult so much as time consuming.

Yes, you need access to FDRS which is Ford Diagnostic and Repair System. A two day license will cost you $50 and that's all you need. It took me 13 hours to update my truck and I was also at 2.7.3 when I updated mine manually, so keep that in mind. You will also need a 32GB or bigger USB drive formatted to exFAT as well as a battery charger as your truck will need to be connected to a charger throughout the whole process.

Thank you for this. I'm not asking for pity but just for some context. My wife is quite ill so just a small act of kindness in pointing me the right direction really does help me right now. Looking into this is a good distraction for me right now. Just feel good that you helped in a more significant way than you know.

Sorry to hear about that, brother. The next distraction you can focus on is making mods on your truck with FORscan. You can learn more about that here:

https://www.f150gen14.com/forum/thre...40#post-319201

Some mods require you to be on the latest software, so once you knock that out, you can start making custom changes to really make your truck your own.

Sync 4 can only be updated via the Mongoose cable. Some modules (like the APIM & TCU) need to be done via USB, but the only way to get the files on the USB is to perform a network scan with FDRS and then FDRS will tell to you insert the USB and download the files directly on it.
You were correct.

Below is my current log. May help someone.Today’s journey started at 6:35 PM

Updated FDRS to v35.5.2

IPC Update (4 Hours)

—Did things a little differently than last time, details:

—Left key in cup holder

—Lights Off

—Driver Door Closed

—Mongoose directly to Laptop USB and not through USB-C Hub (previous attempt)

—Closed door and monitored the Laptop through TeamViewer

—Ran outside to change to Engine Off

—Opened and Closed Driver Door

—Success!

Then a new GWM Update (USB) appeared in FDRS

—Sat in truck with Key in cup holder

—System Updating…

—Shut truck off for 10 mins

—USB Removed when instructed

—Success!

Then a new APIM Update (USB) appeared in FDRS

—Download took approximately 4 mins on Wifi (and I have fast wifi)

—864MB Update

—Transfer to USB took a while (16 MB every 10 Seconds = 9 Mins)

—File Name: F:\FordSoftwareUpdates\MU5T-14G682-JY.VBF

—System updating… (3 Mins)

—Truck off

—Wait 10 mins

—Turned on

—FDRS verified

—Ford Splash Screen Appeared

—Ignition Off

—Success!

—Sync 4 Version 22192 Rev 498

—Still NO full screen CarPlay!

Some have mentioned on the forums that Full Screen CarPlay comes in Version 22228 (Ford Power Update 3.5.3). Let’s see which version I can pull down with FDRS.

Then a new GWM Update Appeared

—FDRS Asked to Login Again to access download server

—GWM downloaded then to USB (151 MB)

—Same Process, USB to Car, Update, Off 10 Mins, Update Complete, Plugged USB back in Laptop, said Yes to update complete prompt in FDRS

—Success!

Then another APIM Updates showed up in FDRS

—Bigger Update 20 Min Download (Multiple Files) total 5 GB!

—Copy to USB will take a long time.

—Went to bed for now 11:33 PM (Just about 5 hours so far)

—TBC in the morning!

Came out at 545am to start the process of USB updating

—System updating…

—Came out at 6:40am

—Truck was off

—Started and CarPlay is now full screen!

—Alexa also enabled!

—Sync 4 Version 22293 Rev 610

TCU update now available via FDRS

—Will continue updating later tonight

Overall, when I first started this journey with FDRS updating, I would say about 20 hours have been put in to get me updated where I am now. I originally was stuck in OTA not updating and had to repair my module, then FDRS updated and updates became available. All of these updates superseded each other but had to be applied one at a time. The BIG one was IPC. 4 hours and failed. Then another 4 hours and it updated. Also, letting the car rest at times for a few hours, updated Ford’s servers and then more updates came in FDRS.

Tips:

Whenever it says Turn Truck Off

Shut off then open and close door

Hell yea! Very happy to hear I was able to point you in the right direction. The last TCU update you saw is the equivalent of 3.5.4 so once you do that, you will have dual phone connectivity and your truck will be fully up to date as far as Power Up Updates go. Welcome to the truck you paid for.

Thanks, Pal appreciate it. I was holding off on that big IPC update because last time it failed, but this time I did things slightly differently.
I also still have this Audio Module that won't go away, and it says nothing needs to be done.
Do I need to worry about that one?

No, I would not stress it. Not sure why it isn't going through, but it's not a big deal. That update is going to give you anything new. Are you familiar with FORscan? Now that you are on the latest Sync, you can enable Unreal Engine and add HVAC controls to your touchscreen. Lots of other cool things you can, too. Everything you need to know is in the thread below:

Yes, I have a FORScan OBDLink EX Cable.
The Unreal Engine is looking awesome; definitely about to do this today.
-I have an OFF question, on my window switches, I have the power fold mirror, they once worked (I was told), but I have an XLT 302A with BLIS and 360 Degree + Lone Lighting, etc.
-Do I not have this, or was this programmed with FORScan before me?
-Weird...

As far as I know, FORscan would be the only way to enable power fold mirrors on a truck. It could be that an update you applied to the BCM or some module undid the FORscan mod that allowed them to work. Unfortunately, how to get it working again goes beyond my scope of knowledge. If you aren't a member of the forum I linked earlier, create an account an ask on that thread. There are many knowledgeable people on there that follow that thread and I'm sure they can point you in the right direction.
