It finally updated. I can't say which of the steps, probably both, allowed it to complete but if it happens again any time soon I'll replace the battery. Thanks to all for their assistance.

Final update. I don't know if it is coincidence or if the successful update opened up a backlog but I have now had updates every night since the 8th and they have all been successful.
