Protection/ESP
It depends on how you stack the warranty plans. I had ESP coverage on by 2003 T-Bird from 2003 until 2018. That was 15 years.
How I did that? At the end of the 3/36, you can extend for five more years for a total of eight - 2021 to 2029. A month or two before it expires, or mileage threshold is reached, you reup the ESP as a used vehicle for another six or seven years. That will take you to 2035 or 14 years of coverage. Assuming Ford doesn't change anything.
I'm doing this now with my 2016 F150. The 3/36 expired on 12/16/2019. I extended the ESP for five more years till 2024. In 2024 I hope to extend for another six years. Total of 14 years. I don't put a lot of miles on the truck, so I normally don't need to worry. But high mileage will cut into the coverage length, so you need to watch and adjust if your driving patterns change.

Just as an example, Ford Extended Warranty | Genuine Ford Protect ESP (lombardfordwarrantys.com) They offer ESP plans for vehicles back through 2006. I blurred out the pricing.
One note, when buying an ESP for a vehicle that is out of warranty, Ford requires a third-party inspection before confirming coverage. That is handled by the selling dealer and typical costs $100. The inspection is waved if the vehicle is under the 3/36 or an existing ESP plan. So as long as you keep renewing, you don't need the inspection.
I have a 2017 and I purchased the ESP from Flood Ford online about a month before my 3/36 ran out. Price was good (may be able to save a small amount more by shopping around, but Flood seems to have a good rep. for selling these). I did 8 year/100k, because I only have 25k on it so far... I wasn't aware of the ability to extend it further as a used vehicle, but if I still own the truck when I get there, I'll be looking into that. It doesn't take much for a single repair to exceed the price of the ESP.
I bought a used 2017 Lariat. I purchased the Premium Care ESP and today my sunroof started leaking. I called my local dealer, and they told me seals weren't covered under the warranty and it would be $150 just to look at it. In the report sent with the warranty package, the Sunroof was replaced for a leak in July of 2019. Now I think I'm screwed. I was under the impression the Premium care covered everything. I should have read it better.

You can see on the different sites (Flood Ford, Ziegler, and others) how many years and how many miles they offer, and also see the difference between buying it right away and waiting until just before your 3 year, 36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty expires.
Yes, 8 years is the max, but you can get higher than 100,000 miles, it goes to 150,000. And the years start, as noted, on day 1, regardless of when you buy. The cost difference in waiting is $100, which is easy to see by switching when you buy it in the options.
If you buy it up front, and use the rental car option on a regular warranty claim, you have "used" the warranty and can't get any pro-rated refund.

Can anyone confirm this? This is uber important info. I just got a prorated refund on my 2018 for my 2020. And i almost used the rental but didnt on the 2018. So if i would have got a 30$ day rental i would have lost my almost $1200 refund. ? Can someone show me this I'm contract? Thank you!
Pick up the phone and call the number referenced in the contract...
