Yes. One of the Ford how to photographs shows it on the inside. With the length of the cable you can go pretty far back. I zipped tied my power cable to it without any issues. I was concerned that some electrical interference might cause the reading to be off.

I do some woodworking. The hand tool guys look at power tool guys and say that's not woodworking. Then both of those groups look at the guys with CNC machines and say that's not woodworking. I see some of the same with this technology. Guys in trucks with computers everywhere shifting the gears, navigating, adjusting their seats, satellite radios, suddenly balk at steering the trailer with a **** instead of steering the truck with a wheel.

Found this on another forum. Looks like the sticker will work with a software update later this year.

Just in time for the holidays. Except we bought our own gifts then had to wait months to unwrap them.

I only tow a travel trailer so not a problem with the sensor. But for owners with multiple trailers or boat trailers without an above waterline mounting location, this is really crappy designing.

For the life of me I can't understand why using a **** down by my leg is easier than just backing up using my mirrors, but I've been driving a trailer for decades. Maybe I need to try it to get it.

I have just over forty years with trailers from small to large. I was curious and doubtful and a couple times turned it off and grabbed the wheel. There is a learning curve just like learning to back up a trailer using the old method. At least for me what has made it easier is thinking of it as steering the trailer not the truck. Once the trailer is lined up you let go of the **** regardless of where the truck is and just use the brake. I think of it as the trailer is steering the truck. Plus 360 cameras on one screen keeps your eyes in one place instead of moving from mirror to mirror to front end.

I’m not certain if I could teach someone quicker with the wheel or the ****. Both require mastering a skill. Oversteering is a problem no matter which system you use.

Where I’m happiest with the system is at my storage facility. I wind up needing to back up about 50 feet. The ground is really rutted in all directions and the trailer and truck bounce all over the place and keeping that line requires a lot of fine adjustments. The system nails it perfect each time.

If you give it one try, you’ll stick to the old way, it will be easier. This takes some practice. For me I need to park the trailer, I’ll use whichever tool is the most efficient to accomplish the job at hand. Some people need to manually steer, it makes them happy. Isn’t it great technology gives us options?

System fail yesterday. The situation was a lollipop end of road campsite, first spot on the right, with four strategically place parking curbs in the middle. With the pro assist I could not hit the spot without being blocked by those curbs. There was also a campsite number sign that the truck was being steered towards. After four tries I turned it off and squeezed in manually. Perhaps with more experience I could have done it with the assist. It was a blindside approach and I had high hopes it would be easier. I’m also certain my old truck with the shorter wheelbase would have been more useful. I was just barely blocked by those parking curbs.

Update review. The learning curve may be equal to learning the old way. Figuring out when to stop steering the trailer and allowing the **** to return to the straight up position is tricky with compound curves.

So far.
Long straightaways in reverse, much easier. Not even close.
Normal 90 degree campsites, easier also.
Odd angles, not initially any easier. I think it takes practice.
Compound, curve on curves, with objects to steer around. Not easier and may never be.

@ F250 here: The Pro Trailer Backup Sensor which is attached to my 5th wheel is not recognized as being installed though it is installed on the side on the pin box.
Took the truck along with the sensor to local Ford. They checked wiring for sensor to truck and truck to receptacle in the bed of the truck. They gave up and said they thought the trailer needed to be connected for it to work. Yesterday we took our rig to a large parking lot and it will not recognize the sensor. "Install backup sensor. Refer to sensor installation instructions'.
So did you have any special thing you had to do to get yours to work? Thanks
Bill

My '19 and '20 both had the back up assist...as well as my '21 . I haven't even tried it with the '21...but I noticed on the other two trucks that the **** was way too sensitive. Turn it just a little and the steering wheel would spin like a top. Much easier for me just to back up using mirrors .

Default Pro Trailer not Avail

Hello everyone, new to this forum and new to my 2021 f150 I picked up a couple days ago. Hoping someone can shed some light on my situation. First off I have the XLT with 302A package, FX4, hitch assist, co pilot 360 2.0, and so on. I attempted to use the pro trailer assist and as many people have eluded to, mine did come with stickers and the yaw sensor. I followed the instructions, which were quite simple, and mounted the sensor to the inside of the tongue (arrows up) and plugged the connector into the port below the trailer plug.

So now the sensor is all set and the trailer is hooked up, i get in the truck and start it. Dash display confirms truck has a trailer on it. So i press the pro trailer button and the display asks me to use existing or add new trailer. So i want to add... i choose conventional trailer. After i click okay for conventional trailer my tailgate camera displays and it says attempting to connect please wait....... then it times out! Says "system not available"!! I am fairly techy and have made sure all my connections are good. All the trailer lights are working properly and the truck has confirmed the trailer is on the truck. But I can not get the pro trailer assist to work..

What Iv tried since...
  • I unhooked and moved the sensor, then rewired the whole sensor.. same result.
  • I drove around with the trailer to better acquaint the two..lol nothing!
  • I did initially try this in the evening under my yard light.. so i thought maybe daytime light would be better.. nothing!
  • I called the dealership. They said they have no idea with the new f150's infotainment system.. would need to poke around for a few hours to find a diagnosis.
  • I checked for updates.. all up to date..
My guess is, I'm missing something very simple.. or the sensor is junk.. or there is a software issue with it.

The dealership is booked out into December so Im hoping someone on here can give me some pointers.. thanks for your time!

I am more curious to use the system than anything. I have no issue backing up trailers with mirrors but if I have the tech.. I want that to at least work.. lol Have a great day everyone!
