Default Powerboost Jerky Shifting

Just bought a ‘21 PB. So far impressed with pretty much everything about it with one big exception. At low speeds (residential stop and go driving), I’m getting horrible jerk shifting. It seems to be a combo of a few problems. First is that the truck is selecting too low of a gear at low speeds. It’s at its worst when slowing but not coming to a full stop followed by accelerating (so basically every intersection with a stop/yield sign or traffic where you have to slow down but not completely stop), but accelerating from a complete stop is also an issue at times. Acceleration in these cases is on par with a teenager attempting to learn to drive a stick.

The second issue is that the jerkiness is exacerbated when the gas engine decides to kick in. There is a 3rd issue that appears to be adding to the mix as well - there’s almost a lurch between 1st and 2nd gear that causes a noticeable pause/gap in acceleration.

I’ve only had it a couple days so the response from service is that it’s still learning my driving habits. Maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised but not confident in the truck’s ability to close this gap - nonetheless I’ll give it some time to see what happens. They’re already teeing it up as “normal” behavior - one comment they made was that the truck would alert if anything out of normal ranges occurred.

In the meantime I wanted to see if anyone else is experiencing this? I have tried modifying my driving habits which helps a little bit but nowhere close to a fix.

A few details on the setup: 3.5 PB, FX4, Max Tow (3:73 gears).

I have seen that complaint on most of the engines (except the gas engine kicking in one). There is a thread on someone one month in on his Platinum w/ the 5.0 and he noted for the first 1500 miles the transmission was a bit rough/jerky. The learning part they mentioned is legitimate, but that doesn't mean there ISN'T a problem. Just that 99/100 it's the learning process and not an actual issue. Just keep driving it like you normally would, be aware that it may behave a bit odd if you are looking to pull out into fast traffic or whatever, and see how it does as the truck keeps breaking in.

Those 10 speed are just jerky for a while when they're new. I was probably close to 10k miles before the transmission faded into the background and i didnt notice it anymore.

Thanks for the replies - definitely puts my mind at ease. Also sounds like a great excuse to drive it just for the hell of it . I’ll give it some time and see how it progresses.

yeah, that's what i would do. Just fyi, it does adapt to how you drive. If i drive hard for a few days, it starts shifting firmer. If i drive easy for a while the shifts are less firm. Actually I would call them perfect when it shifts easier. When the transmission starts shifting firmer, it's definitely more noticable. so just keep that in mind.

When will mine break in? I got 10k and sometimes it feels like the trans will fall out. I even have issues when flooring it. It gets stuck in a gear and slows then shifts after the RPMs top out.

problem with this is its random and if course the dealerships can’t replicate it.

They shouldn't need to. They should reflash the trans back to stock and then you can let it relearn your driving style. Make a call to your service manager and he should get you scheduled. It doesn't take long to do.

I've noticed a little roughness between lower gears. I'm at only 700 miles so hoping it smooths out over time.

On a related note, has anyone noticed rough idling on a 3.5L EcoBoost (2021 F150 Supercrew)?

Took a demo drive yesterday and noticed similar characteristics on a 2021 F-150 with 3.5L Powerboost 10 speed. Nice low end torque but concerned about the jerky shifting (which is dificult to describe accurately for doing web serarches). Investigating the RAM with etorque for, albeit less torque, but an overall smoother driving experience.

I just got my 2021 Lariat F150 2.7 twin turbo in May and it is very jerky with acceleration and when in between shifting. It is almost like it is trying to decide if it should shift up or down. Also when I first start the engine, it is a little rough idling then gets better.
