Default Powerboost issues

I've been lurking for a while as I ordered my F-150 Platinum Powerboost back in August and picked it up last night. It had 25 miles on it when I looked it over. I made it 4 miles from the dealership when I was coasting through a slight turn at an intersection when I felt a unnatural "bang". It felt like a harsh downshift and I was immediately thinking that wasn't good. I continued on and things seemed normal as I got up to about 50 mph. Traffic slowed down to about 20 so I braked to reduce speed and when I touched the gas to get going again.."BANG". Much louder this time and the next thing I know a wrench pops up on the cluster. I called a friend who owns a 22 Powerboost and he told me this was not normal so is started doing some light testing. I could replicate this issue every time I braked and then hit the gas.

With my friend's advice, I pulled over on the way home and shut the truck off. Let it sit for 2 minutes and start it back up. I had a rough start but then it seemed to be better. the transitions seem to be less harsh between EV and the ICE engine. I woke up this morning and drove to work which was about 1 mile from the dealership. I called them and told them about the issue and they asked me to bring it in. They called me a few hours later to tell me some part needed to be replaced between the ICE and hybrid engine and I would get it back tomorrow. I asked what the name was but the manager said he wasn't sure as the tech had just told him he identified it and ordered it and went to lunch. The manager didn't get back to me so I plan to ask what it is when I pick it up. I made it 4 miles with my 83k truck and this is my first Ford. Not a great way to start off.

Has anyone heard of an issue like this? I am really hoping this is some crazy random bad luck on a part and not some overarching lemon issue as my truck was built during all this strike stuff going on.

I will add that i picked my truck up later and the dealership was closed when I left. Going back was not an option.

So far I've had 7000 miles on my '23 PB, my only issue was getting the stop safely now issue twice, but I was able to get the truck started on my own and it's now been months since the last time. My theory is that this is an issue with the truck being turned off while still in gear, or possibly being left in ACC mode, rather than turned off? Nothing major but hopefully Ford comes up with a better way for the truck to explain to me what happened or how to address it.

On my last two Fords before this though, I did have initial quality issues that were fixed and nothing wrong at all after that - my '19 Explorer had a misaligned door panel and my '20 Expedition had a faulty IWE in the 4x4 system. Both fixed under warranty and smooth sailing. Honestly I just expected that and haven't had it with this truck. If Ford has issues it seems like in most cases it is fixable and won't reoccur due to poor engineering. At least I hope! Good luck with getting your truck right.

Having initial issues that were resolved and the vehicles were fine is reassuring! Thank you

Sometimes some of the connections aren't plugged in all the way. One of my HV cables wasn't locked into place. Almost everyone complains about the fuses not being seated correctly. What did the code say? You can look in FordPass and it will show you.

The part you might be talking about is the generator/electric motor/hybrid drive unit. The PowerBoost doesn't have a conventional torque converter and there have been some failures of it.

The fault in my app was labeled as a Powertrain Malfunction/Reduced Power. If I click into it it says "A Powertrain or 4WD fault has been detected, contact your dealer as soon as possible"

I would get a "bang" occationally doing what you described -- brake then immidiatly add gas. but a tiny bang, the same "bang" when shift into D/R in the morning. this tranny is too complicated for me to understand anything but for the most part, it shifts like a dream.

I have a '23 Powerboost- almost 8 months and 9k miles later no issues except a slight driveline vibration at 3000 rpm- which has decreased slightly over time. I wouldn't be too concerned as long as the issue is diagnosed and fixed correctly. For a lot of folks here- it's the dealer experience that has been truly miserable. Nobody wants a new truck to have issues- but to compound that with an incompetent or indifferent dealer experience is a bitter pill to swallow. These trucks are incredibly complex- even more so if you went the hybrid route like I did. I think it's almost inevitable at some point to have an issue of some kind. BUT- this is my first domestic car purchase since I had a '93 Trans Am (I'm 53)- and the fit, finish and initial quality of this truck (including the paint) as well as the best engine (man is this thing effortlessly powerful) is one of the highest quality I have ever experienced- and I've owned (and still do own) plenty of Audi's and BMW's (great cars too)....So, Ford knows what they're doing with the F150, I am firmly convinced- but when you sell a million trucks a year- there are going to be some swings and misses; I'm sure those with more experience with the brand than myself may be correct that quality was better 10 years ago, but the list of things I can't say that about seems to get shorter every year.

Here's hoping you have a dealer that can get you back on the road quickly and that you go years without having to visit them again!
