powerboost
I have experimented with a small ceramic 110V 1500W heater on the passenger floorboard since I have the 7.2KW option. Instant heat but not worth it for me... now if you don't have a heated wheel and seats then maybe that is a good solution for you.
AC compressor is run from an electric motor independent from belt/engine. I haven't see the system (everything is jammed in there super tight), but I can definitely hear a motor on with engine off when the AC is running but the engine is stopped. Under that condition, the engine will cycle on only when battery discharge requires it. Heat comes from a normal coolant to air heat exchanger, and I assume but am not sure that it's the hot loop.
I believe that this arrangement has been fairly standard on hybrids for some time.

As many have said the AC compressor is driven by an electric motor. The heat comes from the engine coolant. When the engine is off the water pump is driven by the belt driven starter motor and the radiator shutters close to minimize cooling of the coolant and maximize the amount of heat available before the engine has to restart to heat up the coolant again.
