Oil Separator
I have a 2022 STX with 2.7L..My neighbor has one of these https://www.americantrucks.com/jlt-v...lack-1116.html on alll his vehicles..He has me convinced my truck would benefit from one..Anyone care to discuss pros and cons? How difficult is the install? Thanks
I have one on my 2023 Lariat, 2019 Avalon along with a 2005 GTO. I believe they catch a lot of oil and other crap that would be sent back into your engine. They cut down on intake and throttle body deposits. Some swear by them others don't like them. It think they are beneficial.
I had one for 4 years in my old ram hemi, then took it off and run with out it for another 4 years. honestly I can't tell a damn difference, the throttle body is just as clean with or without the catch can. that said, the hemi is an NA engine, and I heard some say the forced induction engines would benifit as they normally have more blow bys. IMO it's like CAI, it makes you feel better more than what it does to the engine. and you have to remember to drain every once in a while which I get tired of after a while.
A oil separator or catch can won’t do anything for the cleanliness of a throttle body. The vapors are drawn from the outlet of the can, after the throttle body, not before.
I can’t see this, if you live in a cold part of the country, and the winter catch can will collect a good amount of condensation. This stuff will collect in a can and look like black coffee with creamer. It’s actually really nasty looking crap. Newer vehicles with the dual injection or direct injection will have a strong fuel smell as well.

I also have one on the PCV on my 23 5.0, it collects a good amount of gunk. Some people also install one on the intake side, this is the culprit for the throttle body, but in reality, it’s the PCV that produces probably 90% of gunk that would normally go back into your intake, manifold.

They collect "junk" because they convert what normally goes through the intake in vapor form to liquid by cooling it down. I think they are mostly a feel-good item because "look at all the crap that didn't go through the intake". If the vehicle is kept outside in a cold winter environment, the water in the can can freeze, clog the system up, and create a real issue. If you choose to add one, just make sure you keep it emptied before it fills up, because running with a full can also will cause issues. Running one is a no for me; you have to decide for yourself.
