I had a rock hit my windshield at 75 mph - literally made me jump in my seat..
I forget what i was driving, but a large piece of gravel came off a truck tire and hit my roof right above the windshield. Huge bang, really got my attention. An inch higher and it would have gone over the top, an inch lower and it would have taken out the windshield.
[QUOTE=panamagixxer;7705891I just drove straight to safelite. They had to order the glass and it cost $1,850 to replace. Did a great job, was expecting a lower cost.[/QUOTE]
You got ripped off, big time. My Ford dealer 2 weeks ago quoted a little over $1000. Here's what Safelite in PA quoted today for my Platinum:
I propose that it is you who got ripped off. The difference between Standard and Premium is $90 and for that you get an application of Rain-X …
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it looks like you made a foolish decision and are taking it out on me. The difference between the $1850 you paid and the $528 quoted to me is $1,322.00. i did not have Safelite replace my windshield, so I have not been ripped off. I use Safelite as a baseline for cost comparisons between OEM replacement and local glass outfitters. I feel their products are inferior to many OEM's as the last time I used them was on my Jaguar XKR convertible.... their glass had distortions and waves in it. Before that, my Audi dealer used Safelite to replace the windshield on my A8 and the glass was so distorted they had to re-do it. Hope your glass is free from those aberrations.
My experience/opinion, anecdotal though it may be, is that Soundscreen/acoustic glass appears to be more prone to cracking. Even from what has been minor impacts that would have at most caused a "star" impact in the past.
I've been driving for just shy of 50 years now. Prior to owning vehicles with acoustic glass in the past 10 years, I replaced maybe 4 windshields. I have replaced 6 acoustic windshields in the past 10 years. My experience is also that they are more prone to an impact causing a crack that almost immediately runs across the windshield. Prior to my retirement 8 years ago, I drove about 60k miles a year across all vehicles; I now drive about 20k. Take it or leave it as you see fit.
