Default Idiot Move

Was so excited to get out on the water last week that I forgot to double check the hitch on the trailer. Turns out it was not on the ball correctly. Came off going down my steep driveway. Felt it come off and should have rolled out instead of stopping as it rear ended the truck. Luckily no damage to the boat even though the boat basically flattened the winch. (The plastic roller was hard enough to flatten the metal winch but not hard enough to damage the bow...crazy..)

The damage to the truck is not bad but I have a disease where it will drive me nuts looking at it.

Now the dilemma:

1.. Fix all of it now.
2.. Leave it as it is a truck and what is a truck without a dent in the tailgate.
3.. Partially fix it as in replace the plastic ($144) and pull the bumper back.

I guess I could run it through insurance but I am hesitant to do so.

Found an exact tailgate here from a wrecked one that would be plug and play for $1500 Canadian. I can see a ton of them in the US for around $600. The truck is a lease so I will have to fix it at some point in time.

Uggggg.

That sucks. As a regular boater, I feel your pain. My OCD would not allow me to drive my truck like that, though. I would get it fixed.

We've all done something similar on at least one occasion. If it bothers you, either save up to fix it all at once or gradually replace the parts over time.

I have done it as well w/ my 16 Platinum pulling my boat . It happened when I started on the Hoover Dam bypass[on my way to Lake Havasu] and hit a bump
Didn't hit the beautiful tail gate but destroyed the bumper
I feel your pain!
At least you got it over with, probably will never happen again

I was hooking up the horse trailer once in the pouring rain and in my hurry to get out of the rain, put the drawbar into the receiver upside down, with the ball down and the nut up. Lowered the trailer on it and locked it. When I bent down to hook up the safety chains, looked at it and thought "something doesn't look right.' Had to look again before I saw what was wrong, and I always double check, since we are carrying living beings. After that, I triple chack.

My kid ran over somthing on the road the other day. Repair costs over $2500 for a bunch of plastic parts......underneath the car.....

We'll use insurance. I think you need to as well. Those rear sensors are likely damaged as well......

Same thing happened to me about 1.5 yrs ago on my 2021 STX. Smashed the tailgate and one taillight.
I ended up getting g a new tailgate because the aluminum was too expensive to fix. New painted tailgate using my old molding pieces cost about $1,400. Then instead of replacing my one halogen taillight, I swapped them out for OEM LEDs.
So that one screw up of mine cost me about $2200 out of pocket. Not one of my prouder moments.

The Pin was in mine. I normally attempt to lift it off but I had injured my chest a week back and didn't want to re-injure it, so I didn't do it. Again, I should have crawled down under it to look at the foot to see if it was under the ball.

Again, idiot move.
