Default Gearing question

Hello everyone, I Ordered a 2022 lariat with the 5.0 and 3.31 gears. I see on here some people say that it needs the 3.73 gears with the 5.0 but they usually say that because they are towing or adding larger tires. I will not be towing with this truck nor will I be adding larger tires. I wanted to know if the 3.31 gears are really that slow/bad. I do occasionally like spirited driving and wouldn’t mind the better highway mileage, but don’t want to feel like I bought the inferior product. Is 3.73 gears really necessary to have a fun quick feeling truck if you’re not towing or adding 35s with the new 5.0’s, thanks in advance

3.73’s should be the only option. You will be disappointed. You are already questioning your decision.

So I was in same situation , ordered 5.0 with 3.31 gears. Thought I made huge mistake after reading some comments on forums. Ive only got 115miles on new truck as I picked it up last Tuesday. But so far not disappointed at all. Coming from a 2014 5.0 that had 3.55 gears, this new truck is far better , and I’ve only used minimal throttle so far. I’ve not driven a 5.0 with 3.73 gears so I can’t compare them. The 23.5 mpg on way home from dealer was nice too.

I have no idea why so many people hate on the 3:31 gear. It’s actually a really good ratio with the 10 spd. I pull a steel 18’ car hauler with my car in it from time to time and it pulls fine with stock size tires. It never feels like it lugs a lot and I live in an area that has a lot of short steep hills. I never notice it. I pulled same stuff with a 16 f150 and 3:55s with a 6r80 and 35” tires and it did fine. These people saying regear the truck are wild. If you pull a lot then sure you need a 3:73. If you don’t and you aren’t putting bigger tires on you’re gonna love it with 3:31s. Truck is still quick and it gets about 24 mpg at 72 on the highway.

I currently have the 5.0 with the 3.31 and can say it’s a perfect daily driver. I no longer tow a camper so this truck is mostly for work commute and highway driving. It gets great mileage (24mpg on highway) and loads of power when I need it. I’m not sure why people say the it will be slow or that is sucks. To me it’s the right tool for the job. If you tow then go with the options that best suit your towing requirements.

My first 3.5 ecoboost had 3.31 gear ratio, before I started towing any travel trailers. That thing was both fast and got great mileage; when I first got it, the power was kinda scary since I was used to driving an Explorer with a 3.0 V6. You will be just fine if you aren't towing a big boat or travel trailer.

You can be ok but why should you accept lower performance on a vehicle ordered?? If the 3.31 gearing is for fuel mileage, you may be in the wrong vehicle anyhow. People love the 2.7L Eco for fuel mileage.

The characteristics of the 5.0 go really well together with 3:73 gears not that it’s bad with the other gearing. But if performance is important to you whether you tow a trailer, adding bigger wheels or not you’ll appreciate the 3:73 gears. To me it really wakes the 5.0 up as well as better towing performance and the flexibility to adding bigger wheels without having to regear if you decide to.
