I contacted a salesman at my local Ford dealer (small town Texas dealer) by email a couple days ago and spec'ed out what I will want to order in a '22 King Ranch. I see a couple small price increases but no biggie. He also offered 2700 off MSRP.
One of the things I had requested was 4x4 because I will be driving in muddy conditions from time to time. The sales guy took it to mean that I wanted the FX4 package, but I really don't know the difference between the two. Looking at my 2021 brochure does'nt really help. It LOOKS like (to me at least), that it includes off-road features I'd likely not use, skid plates (which I would like, and they show on the 20321 build and price for no extra cost, and floor liners - which I had planned to get, but I wanted the Husky X-act Contour. Is that all it is?
But for the most part, it looks like a fair deal, all things considered.
Also listed is CV Lot Management... what the heck is that?

If your build's rear axle already has a desirable ratio and is locking, I would (and did on my '19 and my ordered '22) absolutely skip FX4 to save the money
I have the FX4 package on my Platinum Powerboost and really like it. It seems there is a lot of misinformation about what is included. See below for this. The skid plates I got are 2 steel plates covering the front differential and transfer case and an ABS one for the fuel tank. There is a soft plate over the transmission for aerodynamics I assume that is not part of the package. I like the Hill Descent and Rock Crawl mode and the floor mats are really nice in addition to the also included carpet ones. You get both with the KR and Plat. Seems like a great deal at $1005 for all you get.
Yeah the person above saying the skid plates fell off obviously wasn't looking at the skid plates and instead at a heat shield or sound dampening material.
jcaspar nailed it in the features. The tray style floor liners in 2021 are really nice, a big improvement over the 2020 and earlier ones and even have a nice F-150 logo in them. I don't see anything you gain by getting Husky liners over them.
Hill Descent Control is nice to have, especially in muddy terrain. The ABS system can manage the brakes at a much faster rate than a human can, and it is just nice to have. Lastly, getting the 3.73 rear doesn't make it electronic locking unless you are ordering a PowerBoost or adding the Max Trailer Tow package, as both of those come with the ELocker 3.73. You can have a 3.73 that is an open dif, so make sure you know what is shown on the order guide. If your order doesn't already come with an E-Locker, than FX4 is one of the better ways to get it and the overall value of the package is improved.
In all, there is no harm in FX4, it adds stuff you may or may not use. And the cost isn't astronomical. But if you are getting a PowerBoost or Max Tow equipped vehicle, that wipes out one of the bigger price advantages of FX4 (The locking rear) and makes it tougher to get full value out of.
The skid plates are not paper thin and the fuel tank one is ABS not aluminum. Depending on your trim or engine level you might already have mono tube rears and the e-locker. In this scenario you can get aftermarket skid plates and Husky liners that are better quality for much less. The Hill Descent and Rock Crawl modes can be added with Forscan.

I agree with the above except it should be noted that Hill Descent cannot just be added with Forscan, you also need the button and to dismantle the portion of the dash to install it.
Depending on the discount on the truck and other rebates, in my mind it is still worth it to just get the package. After A-Plan discount you couldn't buy aftermarket skid plates and floor liners and all the rest for what FX4 cost me on mine, even though my PowerBoost came with the elocker already. So in the end I think that is the ultimate deciding factor, for the items in the package you want, how much is it to buy them aftermarket and your time installing them? If the answer is more than the cost of FX4 after discounts/rebates, then probably just get FX4.

You have the exact color and build of what I initially wanted. I could not get away from the maroon inserts on the doors, dash and center console. Ended up with an Agate Black Platinum instead.
