Also when you select a destination there is a selection to not use 4WD roads/ paths. I missed it one time up in the mountains, and it routed me over some pretty rough old logging roads.

I can set a destination on pavement but it will ultimately take a gravel road. It's the shortest route but not by much. What options is it on the screen or settings

When you set a destination before you hit go or start, look at the screen and will ask if you want to use dirt roads or 4wd something like that.

I’ve tried every setting and the answer is no, you can’t. It’s case specific though. The map simply doesn’t know that road is gravel so there is no way to avoid.

While you can set it to not use 4X4 roads, I think the issue is sometimes NAV doesn't know it. We were on a Montana road trip last summer, up in the foothills outside Livingston, and needed to get from A to B. Specifically checked NO 4x4. There were two ways to get from A to B, one was slightly longer, took you up to a highway, then along the highway to another road that led to B. The shorter route had found a road that was more direct. It suggested it, we took it.

Started out okay. Then turned to gravel. Then turned to dirt. Had it been raining, we would have turned around, but it was dry, so we kept going. There was about 6-8 miles of unpaved dirt road, before we hit asphalt again.

I have no idea how maps & NAV work, how they get their data, but I'm guessing it had no idea this was a dirt road. Wife & I looked at each other, and said next time we'll listen to Waze.

I know in MO a lot of the county roads are gravel, so if I selected no gravel roads I couldn't get to my kids houses.

Well yes keep driving with your pavement prancer and eventually the Navigation will automatically reroute you to a possible road that is more to your liking.
