The large majority are NMC based Lithium (Nickel Manganese Cobolt Lithium). A small amount of EVs use LiFePO4 based Lithium batteries (LiFePO4 = Lithium Iron Phosphate).

LiFePO4 batteries are inherently more stable than NMC batteries, have longer lifespans, and cheaper, but have a much lower energy density compared to NMC Lithium. (You might expect about 30-40% less range than NMC batteries)

NMC Lithium energy density is 150-220 Wh/kg
LiFePO4 energy density is 90-160 Wh/kg

LiFePO4 is good for grid storage, NMC Lithium is good for EVs

It was definitely a weird response. Why even bring up LifePo, that’s like doing an “ACTUALLY…” if someone says F-150s are gas or diesel because some F-150s out there have been set up to run on natural gas. That’s great, please take me to a US dealership selling LifePo4 powered EVs.

Supposedly, Tesla will start making some of its standard range Model 3 in the US with LiFePO4 batteries. Not sure when that will start. Currently Model 3 made in China are LiFEPO4.

Someone goes "EV batteries are lithium ion.", I go "Ok, what type? Because there are several types.". So, yes, I am the nerd that will go "Well, actually..."

That’s not a nerd thing, it’s just dumb. It didn’t require further explanation or description because in normal EV discussion what he said was fine, as his follow up link showed. It’s like when someone calls the EVSE a charger. It isn’t, but who really cares. The only thing that cares what it does is the car.

I was. BUT. When I can get a loaded up Platinum ICE HYBRID for under $70K with more options (Power Running Boards). Or. Pay $90k+ for a Platinum lightening for some reason doesn’t have power running boards. Just doesn’t make sense. That is $20K difference, That is A LOT of gas you have to use to break even. Roughly 130K miles of driving the ICE and that’s not even calculating the cost of electricity to recharge your truck. It’s not free to refill, especially on the road at fast chargers.

Plus. I have the convenience of refilling my tank from empty In 5min or less.

If the cost was more in line with the ICE version, then YES, absolutely would buy it. But not for $20,000 more.

I too agree. They should have had a plug in hybrid instead. Give me 60+ range of city driving, then gas. I think for most people, day to day would be all electric. Long trips and towing would be electric/gas combined. Best of both worlds. It just makes more sense. Would have been all over that.

just my two cents.

FWIW: I reserved a F-150 Lightning but after thinking more about it, I just couldn’t justify the cost difference. So I bought a 2021 F-150 Powerboost Platinum for $22k less.

I'm kind of in the same place ^

I reserved a Lightning just-because, it was fun, and I have a spot in line in case I want it, but, what I am planning in my head if everything works perfectly, is to order a Platinum Powerboost in/for 2022. Those Lightning prices are up there, and the city mileage improvement of the Powerboost is legit. For me down here in The South, being able to sit at stoplights, drivethroughs, school pick up wait lines, etc, running the A/C and stereo off battery power, is huge. If we didn't do our traveling in my truck, and/or if the Lightning wasn't so much more expensive than a Powerboost Platinum, I'd be more interested, even with the wait. Even without accounting for longer travel, that is a big price difference.

Can't say for sure until they open the initial order banks and maybe build/price next quarter though...as well as announce ICE 2022 F150 pricing...kind of scared of that one honestly
