Default “Empty” Fuel Tank

2023 SCREW Lariat with the Max Tow 38 gallon tank. Fuel gauge was on E with “17 miles to empty” displayed. Pulled in to a station and got only 32 gallons in the tank. Is this typical?

You only have a 36 gallon tank so yes, that is probably spot-on, depending on the MPG you were getting at the time of 'miles to empty calculations'. One of course should never, EVER consider the display as the final authority...it is simply a driver's "aid".

Sounds about right. My '21 Lariat took 5 gallons when on E once. I don't like to run it that low but did once when being careless .

Agreed with the others. There is an unspecified reserve capacity built in that accounts for the delta.

Look at it this way. With the 36 gallon tank you can ignore the reserve and have a usable 32 gallon tank. With the 23 gallon tank, the usable volume would be 19. That would get old real fast.

Not positive on the newer trks but the 11-14 is supposed to have 3-4 gals left as you approach dead empty....Also remember the gasoline in the tank keeps the fuel pump from overheating.....Meaning you need some left in there.??. I have found all fuel gauges will read a little different in each trk ??

You have about 4 gallons left when your DTE says zero miles. I've verified this numerous times at the pump and in a spreadsheet comparison between displayed DTE and calculated DTE.

This is a Gen 13 truck with the 36 gallon tank. In my experience, the DTE was pretty dang spot on without much of a reserve otherwise. Then Gen 14’s could be different..

Also, I ran that truck down to less than 5 miles to go on the DTE probably 15 times or more (work truck with on board fuel) and never once had a problem with the pump overheating. In the desert. Not gonna try it with my new truck
