Unhappy Dreaded Black Screen APIM Module???

Hey folks. My first post in many years. Life always in the way. I have a 2023 150 Lariat and my 12" monitor has gone black. It died after filling with gas and I could smell gasoline in the cab which had never happened before and may be a coincidence. After reading forum threads (lotz of them) I kinda think that my apim module has died and my warranty ran out 1900 miles ago (yup, old luck is back). Where can I purchase a new preprogrammed module (sync 4) and how hard is it to replace. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Also, is there some sort of safety feature in this truck that may have shut down that module if there was some sort of glitch. The smell of gas when it happened still bothers me. Many thanks. Bill from South Carolina!!!!

If your Fordpass is connected, message me the VIN so I can pull the codes.

Got your message. The truck is only reporting a few stored codes and none of them are with the APIM. Does the radio still work and it's just a black screen, or is everything associated with the touchscreen not working?

If I do a soft reset (vol + >), the radio will come on with volume control. I have a backup camera and after a soft reset, I get the ford logo but it seems like its an extended period of time than compared to a good system. After the logo times out back to a black (blank) screen. I've poked all around it but the touch screen appears to not be working. I've also disconnected the battery for 30 minutes but nothing changed. Any ideas and was one of the codes related to the fuel system. As previously mentioned, when it first failed to light up, it was just after a fill up, I could smell gasoline in the cab which I've never noticed before. Thoughts? Bill

No, the other codes have nothing to do with the fuel system and they are old stored code and not active faults. I have no idea where the smell of fuel came from.

Unfortunately, without any codes being reported, it is virtually impossible to see what is causing the screen to go black remotely. To me, it sounds like a bad APIM and not the screen itself based on the symptoms.

If you want to DIY the APIM, you cannot just throw any APIM in there. It has to be the same part number and FDRS would be needed to program it to ensure the software it is on is the correct one based on the other Sync-related modules. In terms of buying a pre-programmed APIM, there are very few vendors out there I would trust with that. I loan out the cables needed to use FDRS for free, so if you decide to take that route, let me know and I can you to the waiting list to borrow one of mine. Details are here:

Thanks for the info and the guidance. I have an appointment with a local shop and should find out tomorrow what the damages will be to fix the issue. Historically, he has been fair with the pricing and will try to work with me since the truck only has 41K on it. I'll find out. I may do it myself using the guidance from rugedraw if it gets too expensive. I'm retired so money is always an issue if I can do it myself. Getting old is such a pain. Once again, thanks for the welcome and the guidance. It's very much appreciated. Bill from South Carolina!!!

Hi Bill, I’ve had several issues like that on my 22 F150 including the display going black at times. Every time it has been a module requiring a reprogram or an update. It may be worth a visit to the dealer. I’m lucky I have a technician that works at the dealer and checks issues for me on Fords technical website for special service messages and TSB’s using your vin number. Good luck!

Hey Folks.
Just a follow up to my issue. Ended up at the local Ford dealer and found a faulty apim as we suspected. The cost of the module was less than 1K and the shop charges were north of 1/2 K. I don't know what is involved with replacement but i kind of assumed that it was not that much trouble to replace but again, my assumption. Thanks for all the help. Kinda wished I had purchased the extended warranty now. Out by 2300 miles. Bill
