Correct, sir. When collapsed, the folded gate halves don't extend any further than the wheel wells do. Unfortunately, they are also pretty much perfectly positioned to block the bed lights...

Agreed, especially with the addition of the tie-downs that have been added to each side of the gate (at least on my XLT). A bungee or tie-down around the extender and latched to those keeps it in place.
FWIW, I have the standard tailgate, without the "workspace" features, and it does have the hole for the extender pin. Mine is covered with a bedrug, but it does align perfectly with the pin. I have no intention of using it, but it did come in handy in letting me know that I had initially installed the extender backwards lol!
