Amazon has a set of screws for less than $10. They are tapered, self-threading. Previous iterations had security screws, a projection in the screw head that would prevent using a regular bit. If poorly explained, look up Tor-X security bit, or Tor-x tamper proof.

I would definitely run a real tap in there to get decent threads if you ever need to replace them. But then again, I just bought a tap/die set off Amazon for 50 bucks.
That's what I did.

Cheap taps can get the job done. Just be careful not to bend the tap or it will snap off.

I think … could be wrong … that if you tap the threads the old fashioned way, you can’t use the self tappers. The end of the screw will mess up the threads.

I would agree. Are self tapping screws even like a nominal thread size? I thought they were just rough/course threads to hold themselves, not be able to run a machine screw in afterwards.

It depends. Most common "self-tapping" fasteners have coarse screw threads. Others have machine screw threads with a tapping device.

Thread revive. I bought the the kit mentioned in another thread from Amazon and the screw size is indeed 6mm x 1.0 pitch. However, they are not quite what I'd consider self tapping, requiring too much torque to run in cleanly. The kit had a few extra screws, so I took one and used a Dremel to cut a notch lengthwise in the tread and used that screw to prepare the holes for the rest. IOWs, it's a home made tap. Another problem is that squares cut in the bed liner are not quite large enough to access the screw holes straight on, so a die grinder will be used to round out a relief from the plastic in each of the 16 locations as needed to allow straight on alignment.

EDIT: The homemade tap worked, but not well enough. I had hoped I could just screw them in, but I ended up buying the correct 6mm x 1 tap. Every hole was tapped then I could screw in the torx fasteners.

You do not need to cut the bed liner. Just pull it towards you and you should have plenty of room. A little grease on the threads keeps the screw from snapping in half. I did them with a T-handle torx to prevent breaking. Many have snapped screws. Good luck.

Sorry, but there was no way the bed liner could be pulled out to make the holes line up for the tap. It might work if there was only a little misalignment, but not on mine. Thanks.
