Betting it’s a momentary appearance.

Suspect most of us get something similar, usually immediately after start up when power levels are low and you have all those computing modules competing for power as they all try to boot up. And sometimes they boot up slowly triggering moments like you caught.

Same. Even took it to the dealer for it several months ago, and they supposedly reflashed the truck. I still get the message from time to time. Some speculated it was due to them removing the tailgates to spray the bedliner and things didn't get reconnected properly. However, the dealer took mine apart and said everything looked fine and it was a software issue... Oh, well.

When the sensors in the back of the truck are obstructed, and they cannot get a valid reading, then the reverse brake assist cannot perform correctly.

Sometimes this can happen because of the surfaces directly behind your truck, or it thinks you are towing something (rear sensors can't brake for you when you're towing,) or if the sensor is just dirty from dirt, ice, snow, etc.

Nope. Did it all day every time I went into reverse.

Followed instructions in manual. Made sure doors, hood and tailgate were secure. Also cleaned rear camera.

Pretty common issue, well documented on the forum, but no real explanation other than, "It's one of those things these trucks do".

personally, that feels like a very unsatisfactory answer. Feels like a cop out. (I don't know what the answer is).

It seems if I put my 21 into reverse before all computers have fully booted I get the reverse brake assist not available message. If I wait the few seconds for all the booting to finish (everything is up on the screen) before shifting into reverse, I do not get the message. I'm thinking software and where the reverse braking assist is in the boot order. Just my experience with my truck.
