Default Another AGM battery thread...

Hey guys...I know there are several AGM battery threads floating around...but I didn't want to hijack someone else's questions so figured I'd start my own.
My truck is a '21 Lariat SCrew with 34K miles.
I too have been experiencing the Low Battery Messages and the welcome lights and dome lights not lighting up etc. So today I replaced the factory battery with an EverStart H7 from Walmart.
I went into Engineering mode and saw that the battery voltage was showing 15.2 - 15.3 after starting the truck with the new battery installed.
I then reset the BMS by hitting the bright lights and brake to reset it.
I have a couple of these chargers
Amazon Amazon
and I'm thinking about hooking up a plug to the battery so I can plug in this charger (without the spring clamps...similar to an onboard charger) when the truck is going to set for more than a couple of days. There is an AGM setting on this little charger.

Any thoughts plus or minus ?

Yep, my truck sits unused for months at a time, I have a Battery Tender essentially permanently wired to the truck, all I have to do is hook the pigtail from the battery to the cord on the charger that is hanging from the ceiling. Interestingly based on some threads about trucks that sit and battery problems, I don't get any messages, nor have any problems with the battery in my truck. It is not plugged in to the charger and I last drove it August 27th...

I replaced the H6 in my 22 5.0 Lariat with a Wal Mart H8 10 days ago. I used a CTeK 5.0 charger on the new battery overnight before I installed it. Monitoring the Battery State of Charge PID with the OBDLink app, and my target SOC set at 95 using Forscan, my SOC is hovering around the low 90s, including a weekend where the truck didn’t move. I usually make two trips per day of about 10-12 miles each. My guess is with the new battery, you won’t need the charger unless you make really short trips, or let your truck set for a week or more at a time.

Did you fully charge the new battery before install in the truck ? I set up a remote charge hookup for our truck....connector in front passenger wheel well behind the liner front by bumper.

I did not charge it before installing it...but the manufacture date was Jan of 2024...so it is brand new. I will check the voltage though before I drive it and see what it's at.

.
The 15.2 v in engineering mode had to be the BMS detected the new Battery state of charge was too high for to long a time on the shelf and is doing a Refresh Charge to correct the condition..
It will come down in time to an SOC in the 12.2 range +/- pre-crank, and running in the 14.1 range +/-.
Look up Ford Doc 414-00 Charging system general information, PDF.
First printed page, second paragraph beginning with Smart charging.
Best to study the whole Doc and get a good education.
Good luck.

I have had that exact same Nexpeak charger since October and I use it now for the daughter's car or whatever else may need it. My truck and the wife's car both have Nocos mounted onboard.
The cables and clamps feel very flimsy but it actually seems to be a pretty decent 10-amp charger so far for being as super-cheap as it is.
I haven't left it connected for any length of time past when it says full, so not sure if it's any good at maintaining...like on the motorcycle/trickle setting.

If it were me, I would remove the battery and fully charge it with an AGM friendly charger then reinstall and reset the bms again following the instructions in the manual for a new battery install which include leaving the vehicle alone for a set number of hours after the reset. That way you will be starting the bms strategy properly imo.

On the maintain note, I have seen some dealers are using the small chargers like battery tender , noco etc as maintainers in some showroom vehicles that sit in there and are opened and closed etc by customers to investigate every day for months.
