While we're on the same subject, does the factory navigation include streets of Mexico and maybe Europe in it? I want to know how extensive the map is. I once rented a car in Europe that had USA and Mexico on its navigation so I was wondering if the F-150 was the same way.

@dolsen There are new complications that make this retrofit more tricky than last gen.

Be cautious when you buy a salvage APIM. The LVDS outputs soldered on the PCB are different depending if it supports the 8” or 12” screen. If you plug in the wrong type you will send 12VDC down a data bus to the touch screen which may or may not cause harm to other components.

Secondly we can’t install updated NAV files on to any APIM like we could with last gen, so when updates inevitably release, your VIN might be blocked from the server side from those updates. I don’t know for sure because nobody to my knowledge has done this sort of swap on a 14 Gen yet.

It should be possible, but I don’t think what you would gain is worth it unless if you intend to upgrade a 8” Sync display to the 12” one.

You shouldn’t need to replace your GPS antenna. The reason why you had to with your old Ford Edge was because My Ford Touch (Sync 2) relied on a GPSM for synchronized clock settings when traveling through various time zones and for compass inputs. Ford doesn’t use them
anymore, so if you have a GPS antenna now it should be sufficient for your planned mod.

You might already have an GPS antenna for your clock and compass in a non-nav vehicle but that’s just a guess.

This is a very interesting post and is much more along the lines of the type of information I was requesting, so thank you for that.

There is a website, infortainment (dot) com that sells the Nav upgrades for sync 4, and it appears American Truck also sells the infotainment (dot) com product. But I know that I can do it for much cheaper than $1200... or at least I am hoping so. It appears to be specific to the 8" screen based on the provided pics. Maybe there is still hope?

I have done several projects like this before, so I have a pretty good idea of what it entails, but I want to make sure it is possible.

EDIT: I am only looking for information on how to add nav. I already use Apple CarPlay and google maps currently, but that is not the purpose of this thread, and is, in my opinion, not a suitable replacement for factory nav.
Google maps is only good to load a “trip” with service. A stand-alone gps has the maps loaded regardless of reception. In 2020 i put a very nice pioneer gps in my previous truck it was over $800. The truck was a 08 gmc sierra. The new stereo also had car play and other new tech features that the old truck never had available. I was able to integrate the aftermarket stereo to the steering wheel controls, use the factory xm receiver and I added a back up camera.
My point is I understand wanting integrated products and understand why standalone gps is needed.
good luck adding navigation

Just curious if there was a price rebate for deleting those features? At least the so-called "connected built-in navigation is (I think) a pretty expensive option.

The refund is $200. Kind of a slap in the face, but it is what it is.

In my humble opinion it's not worth the effort no matter how easy it might be to add navigation. 80% of the time it can't find an address when using voice commands. On more than one occasion it has taken me several miles out of my way instead of using a more direct route. It came with my truck but after the first few time using it that were filled with much frustration I don't use it anymore. Usually after an update I'll give it another try but it always disappoints.

I think the question for me can we get just connected nav vs the built in connected nav. Is the APIM from an XLT the same as an APIM from a limited or lariat with the connected built in nav? I too have found several APIMs and will pull the trigger on one once I get my truck. Its all about trial and error until I find what works. I could care less about the connected services, like weather and traffic (I live in rural America where traffic is never the concern).

https://www.oemfordpartsoutlet.com/o...MtNWwtdjYtZ2Fz Here is a brand new APIM rather than using a used one if you wanted. again not sure what else would be missing, maybe an antenna, maybe not.

From looking at antenna diagrams, Fordpass uses the same antenna hardware it seems, now maybe there is a difference in GPS vs Cellular but it would seem from my limited understanding that the harness parts are there and Ford obviously has the parts for the higher end trims, so with some trial and error it should be able to be accomplished.

it’s confusing for sure, but the nearest I can tell is that there is no functional difference between “connected nav” and “built-in connected nav”.
The only difference I can see is in the subscription plan and how they bill for it.
AFAIK, “connected nav” comes with a 90 day trial period after which you begin paying a subscription. “Built-in connected nav”, OTOH comes as a three year feature (think of it as an extended trial period).
I am open to being shown to be wrong, and as I said, it’s confusing at best.
