Default 2021 Towing Question

Hi folk,

I have a 2017 with the 2nd Gen EB and 10 speed. I love it. This generation truck had a Max tow of ~12,200lbs. In my config (4x4, SuperCrew) that number is more like 11,200. The most I have had behind it ~8k. Truck did spectacularly (except for the gas mileage ... that was fun). I have never even thought of putting 11k on the thing.

The 2021 has a published capacity of 14k. Let's assume configured it is ~12,500.

I find myself looking at a bigger boat that is still towable. The one I am looking at will have a boat / trailer weight of ~10,500. With people and other crap I am sure I would be pushing 11,500. Whereas, this sounds like it is within spec, it seams insane to put that behind a 1/2 ton even if it is a 2021 with that high rating.

As much as I love my buck and a half, I am thinking this I may have to move up to a 250 / 350 for this kind of tow.

Question: Who has pulled > 10k in their 150 for any distance? Who has tried this in the mountains or hills? I would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks in advance.

I’d be more concerned with backing down the boat ramp and then the reverse...

You are pulling near the limit, but a boat/trailer is somewhat more aerodynamic than a travel trailer of the same weight. You would be fine with your current truck. You may consider upgrading your brakes to a Stop Tech caliper system and get a tune.. I'm looking at the F-250 vs. F-150 choice too, but those big trucks are thirsty on a normal basis.

The 1/2 ton will pull it, but in dealing with a wet ramp, I'd not even try. I think you're going to want the weight of a superduty for that, and to maintain a stable rear. Light boat tongues are great for the 150, until the weight of the boat gets to where it can push the truck around pretty good.
