I used to have an 08' grand prix GXP which had the LS4 v8. That engine had cylinder deactivation before it got to the trucks. It was notorious for burning oil because each time it would activate/deactivate it would cause oil mist to vent up into the intake. Many people, including myself actually had it tuned out because it was so bad.

So, with the 5.0's already being notorious for using more than a little oil as it is, I came here to see if anyone notices a lot of usage with this cylinder deactivation, and whether or not the 5.0 oil usage actually gets worse.
The 5.0 burns oil until it gets about 30k miles on it. Mine has 45k and i hardly notice a difference in oil level from oil change to oil change.

Left the house with 125 miles on the ODO, got back with 535 miles. All highway, cruise set between 68 and 82 depending on speed limit. Averaged 22.2 MPG on the whole trip.

As to the original question, did not notice the cylinder deactivation, if it occured.

The GMC trucks show a little icon on the dash showing it running in 4 cylinder mode...nothing like this on the Fords?

I suspect there are some waiting for the 5.0 with cylinder deact to explode...even though its been around for quite some time.
I guess they're disappointed.

I don't suppose any of you know if it can be turned off like the stop start feature. Can you?

As for the oil consumption question, you know the specification has changed to 5W30. That should make the difference.

Probably still too early to tell, but I know with the GM's it was always able to be turned off with tuning. I'd imagine Ford's could be turned off with ForScan.

Not that I would want it off as it's not a bad thing, but definitely would be nice to have the option.

Pretty impressive fuel mileage on a new 5.0! . What grade of fuel were you using?

There's options you control. Different drive modes. I haven't experienced the cylinder shutoff because i haven't ventured off normal driving. There's like 6 or 7 driving and 1 of them is ECO. My guess ECO cuts the cylinders whatever. You need to hear the 2021 5.0 litre fire up! The engine purrs like Ive never heard before and this the 3rd 5.0 f150 I've owned in the last 6 years. It idles between 500-600 rpm! I'm just over 1,000 miles, so there's only been 2 or 3 instances that the power has been required. But I can assure you, it's there!

Other than the deactivation, is this still considered to be a 3rd gen coyote? Do the 2021s still have the deceleration rattle the 18-20s had or has this been resolved?

It should be 4th gen, it's power is up again, it's got cylinder deactivation, it's got an external oil pump (IIRC) and some other minor changes.

Will it have the rattle? That's left to be known but in the mean time, I'd keep the oil clean. So far, it has kept my 2019 quiet.
