Default 2.7 break in

At what point does a 2.7 start getting decent fuel mileage? I currently have 3k miles on the truck and just finished a 1,500 mile vacation trip and the best it did was 22 mpg on the readout ( hand calculation was 19.9) and that was with a light tail wind.

How fast are you driving? It's a potent engine, but its small displacement will put it in boost more often than not.

I tell all my friends that have a Ecoboost: "You can have Eco, or you can have Boost; you cannot have both!"

I have a 2016 2.7. I found that if I keep it 65 or below, I will get 24 to 25 mpg. If I run it above that (70 to 75) it will drop down to 20 to 21 mpg. Yes, keep it out of the boost as much as you can.

Mine seems to get better mpg running in sport mode. Staying in the lower gears longer keeps the boost from kicking in so much. Plus, it's more fun to drive .

My mileage with sport went down. Same route that drive in normal. I see a lot of people say that but, on mine it hasn't been the case.

My ‘22 has less than 2,000 miles and I’m getting 20.7 mpg. I came down from 21.1 after I added heavier wheels and tires but seem to be sitting at that mpg consistently now. Mixed highway and city driving.

Mine and my dads 2.7 lifetime was 19.5-21. That mixed with 5% towing 3500 pounds or so

There is a way to change the Lie-O-Meter calibration. I have my pretty close now at 965 vs 1000 OEM value.

At 3,000 miles you should be pretty broken in. Varying RPM’s helps with the break in process. Compare your economy with those reporting on fuelly.com.

I take issue with the term ‘lie-o-meter’. The truck is incredibly intelligent and does an admirable job reporting economy. Keep in mind that hand calculations are very rough estimates in themselves. The fuel cutoff trigger on gas pumps can easily vary by a half gallon or more.

Right. So problem solved by topping off the tank to the point where a dribble results in a handle click, you flood your evap canister with gas, and throw an engine light. But you'll know the tank is full !
