Does your climate control work in redirecting the airflow? If you have dual, do both work? Looks like the gear piece off of the door.

 

It's hard to say without something to judge its scale, but I agree that it looks like the drive end of a diverter door pivot. Possibly something went down the defrost register, jammed a door, and the motor broke that pivot off.
