Trying to prevent the dreaded 5.4 plug ejection
I'm just wondering what is the best way to prevent the 5.4 from ejecting a spark plug? Should I just put inserts in all the holes? Or can I just take and inch pound torque wrench after them every oil change or something? If I can do that I would really like to get the torque spec for the plugs on a 2002 F-150 with a 5.4. I looked in my repair manual but it didn't mention anything about a torque spec. Thanks for the help.
Here is an interesting PDF from a company that repairs Triton heads. the only thing I could find about the torque spec was Autozone and they say 15-20 FP's. What I would do it use a torque wrench to check each plug, a couple of time a year and when ever you are going on a long trip. If you detect a plug loosening then I would do the head job. I rather like what the this company does it is more then a Heli coil. However a Heli coil will work just fine, and the installation is much simpler.
I think the reason why your manual is mum on torque spec's is because of this problem. They don't want to get sued if somebody uses torque spec they supply, even is the are what Ford wants, and a plug gets launched.
