Default Transmission issues...

So this morning i was going to work and about half way there i realized that my truck was having some issues. When it tried to shift into 2nd it would just rev up and not go into gear, to get it into gear i had to let off the gas and go very slow. its a 2002 f150 with the 5.4 and an automatic trans. Then when i was going to leave work i could barely get it home, thank god it is only a mile or two. it would not even shift into first. After letting it sit for a few hours i went out to try it again and i could now shift into first. So i would think it has something to do with heat? i checked the trans fluid and it was fine but smell burnt... which i dont understand because i did tranny fluid less than a year ago (5,000 miles).

Any help would be great and i will answer any questions of course.

EDIT: the truck has 150,000 miles on it, the trans filter has never been done to my knowledge.

Thanks
Matt

If the fluid smells burnt and a darker color it would be due to slipping clutches this could be due to low oil pressure possibly caused by a plugged trans filter but is more than likely worn clutch packs with that many miles.
You could try a fluid and filter change but I think when you drop the pan you find a lot of debris from worn clutch lining.
