Transmission code "A"
I have watched some of this guy's videos just because he seems so skilled. He just rips through a transmission in a few minutes. Good entertainment. He's usually a GM guy I think, but he has a 4R70W here. He has some ID clues too.
p.s. it looks ID'ing them is a problem for everyone the way these guys spend so much time on the little clues. Good luck.

Transmission codes are not encoded (directly) in the VIN so the decoders are useless for this function.
The owner's manuals do not list the transmission identifying information, that data is in the factory service manual.
Here is the info from the 2005 F150 FSM:

Transmission Type
- A — 4-speed automatic, 4R70E
- B — 4-speed automatic, 4R75E
- M — 5-speed manual, M5R2-C
So if you have an FSM and you're sure the transmission is original to the truck you're golden. Not clear what Badjuju has going on.
I'd still verify by actual physical inspection. My door tag says I have an open differential but I put a Traction-Lok in it. You never know what a PO might have done. I did mark the door tag with a Sharpie though, and scratched an "L" in to the diff tag. For the next guy.

I have scoured the internet looking for the definition of my door tag transmission code identifier, it is an "A". I see "U" as a 4r70. But cannot find anywhere what A means. Have seen where a few guys have asked this same question, but no reply. The truck is a 2005 F150, 4.2 v6. I have owned this truck since new, and just cracked 200k miles. figure a new trans is net too far in the future. Just want to know exactly what I am looking for researching/shopping transmissions. Thanks for any help you can provide...

Post a picture of your Vehicle Certification Label located on driver's piller or door. Yours should be a 4R75W or a 4R75E (they changed the designator right in that timeframe). Basically the same trans but the 4R75E (electronic) has an additional speed sensor. Both of these transmissions are readily available. My 2007 is designated "Q" on the Vehicle Certification Label and is a 4R75E.
Question provide details as to what "completely out" means. I ask this because in some fairly rare cases it can be an external sensor causing the issue.

Thanks BareBonesXL and ProjectSHO89. I am working with a 2006 V6. I have also learned that this transmission is fairly easy to source, but the engineers at Ford made it year specific. Meaning that my 2006 needs a tranny from another 2006 V6.
