I finally got around to changing out the VCT solenoids and now there is no more rattling sound at around 1000 rpm.
The camshaft looked good, no sludge buildup. The engine has only 117,000km on it with regular oil changes when the computer told me to. Now with that sound gone, I can hear the engine ticking all that much better

I'm amazed how clean it is in there, not even any staining worth mentioning!

glad your truck gave you the easy way out.

The injectors are original equipment, never been replaced.

And the old VCT solenoids still looked good. The screens were not plugged and all were intact. Not sure why these would fail me.

Probably for the reason why they've been revised two or three times since your truck was built.

^^^^ And or, without X-Ray vision it's hard to tell if the 'guts' won't chuckle just right in response to the infinitely variable duty cycle pulses from the PCM. No 'PUN' intended ....
