Default Tailgate Hinge Rotted

Hello everyone,

My name is Steve, and I have a 2006 F-150 SuperCrew cab with a 6.5' bed. So, the right side hinge on the bottom of the tailgate has completely rotted and separated, as shown in the pictures. Is this something that is gonna force me to replace the entire tailgate? Or is there a place where I can simply get the parts I need to replace the hinge itself? I've never taken once of these apart and especially since it's rusted out, I'm not sure how to do this or what tools I need. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Go to a junk yard and get the part that is bolted ot the bed rail. Looks like the one on the tailgate is ok for now.

I would take it to a body shop and see what they have to say. To me, it looks like a quick weld job and you are back in business.
Scrap yard or U-Pull yard likely has one.
I am assuming you are aware that the left side hinge depends on a good right side hinge to prevent the tailgate from disconnecting (restraints prevent if from falling off). An undamaged right side hinge allows, by design, the tailgate to be partially open and then pulled to disconnect the RS hinge and at that point the tailgated can be pulled to the right and disconnected from the truck.

Yes I've watched videos on how to remove the tailgate so I understand what you're saying here. Right now it's "secure" because it's open, and being tied down with my kayak on top. So between the safety cable holding it down and the left side being good, and a cam strap coming from the hitch (going around both sides of the tailgate), it's not moving around right now at all. I'm going to remove it when I get home though just to be safe. I'll take it to a body shop because I don't see how I can fix this myself. Thank you!

In your case. fixing by yourself maybe an option. I just looked at my 2007, that pivot point that failed is bolted in (Torx), just like Scott91370 mentioned in Post #2

Yeah it looks like I just have to replace the hinge part that goes on the truck bed, and then maybe the hinge inserts on the tailgate itself. But now I'm having trouble sourcing the right side tailgate hinge kit (I've found the left, but not the right smh). I'm sure it'll turn up somewhere online. Looks like it just slides right in though after I take the tailgate off, right?

To remove tailgate.
Two person job to prevent dings.
Open tail gate about half way. While you hold the tail gate up with your knee (or whatever way you wish to), and release the support cables and take them off, then pull the gate up and off the RIGHT pivot (has 2 flat sides on the round pivot to allow this), and then slide it to the right side, off and of the left pivot.

Thank you. New hinge replacement parts should be here today or tomorrow. I'll post when I'm done
