Default Oil Question

I just put 150k on my 97 f150 4.6l and I'm going to change the engine oil tomorrow. Do you guys think I should switch to a high milage oil or just stick with the standard stuff? What kind of oil would u guys recommend. Thanks in advance for the input.

Mobile 1 is excellent oil. But if you have used Motorcraft semi synthetic for this long why change at this point. The oil you have been using must be doing its job or you wont have got 150k on it. I really dont see the advantage of High Mileage oil since most oils are about the same any more.

Agree with rplatt, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Stay with what got you to the 150K. Not to many miracles in a can the work. In fact, are there any?

Heheheh, BillW - to me, beer in a can works a lot of miracles, right up there with duct tape and baling wire :-)~

Seriously - not sure what 'nl2471' means by 'standard stuff' - but IMO, the key is regular changes with approved oils and filters at appropriate intervals based on individual driving habits.

There have been many opinions expressed on this forum about oils and filters - the basic message is to find something that works for you and that you're comfortable with - I choose regular, straight 'dino-based' oil of the appropriate 'SG' rating or better, with a Motorcraft FL-1A filter. So far, so good.

I am a big fan of Synthetic, nothing wrong with standard oil if changed every 3 k or so. Synthetic oil cna go 5k so it a standard oil changes costs. 26.95 and Synthetic costs 56.95. Over a 100,000 mile engine life its 916.00 for regular and 1139.00 for synthetic. ( These numbers are based on an 8.95 oil filter and 8.00 for synthetic and 3.00 for regular oil) So its 223.00 more.. whoopee. For the extra protection to me its worth it. Most shops sell a synthetic oil change for only 20.00 more than a regular oil change. So if you go to a shop its actually cheaper over the 100,000 mile service of the car because of the 5000 mile interval.

If I were you dude, with a buck 50 on my rig... every second oil change from here on out... throw in a bottle of Lucas with minus one quart of your usual amount.

I swear by that stuff man... I love the way it looks running it... just like honey... its gotta stick to the engine parts man... its crazy!!!

Default How to change to synthetic oil.

I have always used the traditional oil in my 1997 Ford 4.6.

What steps would I have to take to change to the newer synthetic
oil ?

After the old oil is drained and the oil filter replaced, would the
engine need any additional flushing or would the new synthetic oil
just be added to the empty crankcase ?

I never considered the synthetic oils until recently but would like to
change over.

Thanks,

Ken H.

just change the oil and the filter and you are done with the conversion.
