Default Oil Question

First of all I have an 03 F150 5.4L Supercrew with 41k miles on it. I bought it a little under a week ago. I plan on changing the oil soon and I am considering switching to full synthetic oil. I am looking at Mobil 1 and Royal Purple. I was told by my father that synthetic oil helps extend the motors life. Would it be a problem to switch to synthetic at the mileage I am at? Also how many quarts do these motors take? Any input on Oil Filters? What is the best weight to use? Sorry for the questions just want to make sure I take the best care of my truck. Wanted one for 10 years now and finally got it!

Edit: Ok so after using the search function I established that sticking with 5w-20 is best, but I can't really establish what the best oil and filter combination is. Or if switching to synthetic would be cause problems. Thanks again for any input!

the motorcraft filter is the best filter to use, 5w-20 mobil one is what i run in my 05 with just under 41k and its the best thing i have done to my truck, i think your going to need 6 qts but it will say in your owners manual under capacities.

or purolator since they make the filter media for motorcraft filters.

I don't have a problem with Purolator, I jsut prefer Wix or Motorcraft. Even though they make the media for the Motorcraft, that doesn't mean its the same quality as the Motorcraft.

i think you will like a good synthetic... If it were me id go with syn then stick with the same oil... if you change back and forth you will be putting your engine in different working conditions and will do different things.. Not a good thing. I am not a big fan of mobile 1 but that is not saying it is necessariy a bad oil...i prefer amsoil and if not that royal purple. if i werent under warranty id use 10w30 but warranty requires 5w20 so that is what i use.

motorcraft is very good semisynthetic oil. Wallyworld sells it quite cheapish.

I think for the present the best oil filter that is made is the K&N. What synthetic oil you use is up to you. I was going to use Royal Purple but it is a dollar + more per quart then the Castrol Syntex I put in it. I must say I am very pleased with the Syntex oil, after it was in the engine for a couple of weeks I noticed an improvement in gas mileage. Royal Purple is supposed to be even better The problem with Royal Purple is not so much the cost but the availability. I can get Syntex everywhere but here in Cheyenne there are only a couple of places to get Royal Purple.

i run royal and use wix . but look in the back of your heads to see if your gaskets are leaking if so i would use the motorcraft blend with wix filter or motorcraft . i got my truck at 61000mi and now have 101000mi ive heard a lot of people use mobil 1but cost more than purple ive also seen that purples better than red line so ? theres a site not sur consumer reports shows oil additives wut to use at wut miles because some oils hove metals for higher miles?/? i no genious ey
