get a oil filter cutter, then inspect after you pull/change.

i used to use motorcraft religiously. kept hearing about them having tearing (of filter media) problems. bought a cutter and the first one i cut open was torn. that combined with the poor experience when trying to inquire/address the problem = won’t buy MC filters again.

ymmv

There are threads that are destined to repeat themselves over and over here. Oil viscosity, brand, and type is one. Oil filter brand and type is another.

The Motorcraft filters are what your manual recommends. Anything else is throwing money and too much thinking at a problem that probably doesn't exist.

However, all that said, I always go with extended mileage synthetic filters with an "anti drain back valve." The Motorcraft filters will have that valve. Cheap filters probably won't. Expensive filters usually do. And I'm certainly overthinking, and overpaying for my filters.

There have been known to be plenty of counterfeit MC parts. I would cut one open again and have another look.

The 2.7 uses the cartridge style, not the spin on metal ones. You can get a very good look at the MC filters for this engine, they have all been well made without any defects.

it wasn’t a counterfeit. and it wasn’t an isolated problem (for that model). just google ‘fl820s torn’ (or similar terms) and you’ll hear/see many many similar reports.
