Default Need advice on head gasket and pulling engine

Well, lucky me, my head gasket is shot. Looking at the engine, I have decided to just pull it to do the work instead of messing around with it in the truck. Looking for some advice to make the job a bit easier from someone who has done it....including the head gasket, not just getting the engine out. Also, while the engine is out, is there anything else I should look for or do or pay special attention to? The oil and coolant have not been mixing, but there is some exhaust gas in the coolant reservoir...and so far there is just a small amount of white smoke out the exhaust every once in a while. I am planning on getting the head gasket set and an oil pan gasket as well, and of course new head bolts. Also, I know it is a bad idea to replace valves/springs without doing work to the bottom end but would replacing the lifters pose any problems? BTW, its a 98 with a 4.6. 165k miles on it.
