Default Pulling the engine....need advice

Well, lucky me, my head gasket is shot. Looking at the engine, I have decided to just pull it to do the work instead of messing around with it in the truck. Looking for some advice to make the job a bit easier from someone who has done it....including the head gasket, not just getting the engine out. Also, while the engine is out, is there anything else I should look for or do or pay special attention to? I am planning on getting the head gasket set and an oil pan gasket as well, and of course new head bolts. Also, I know it is a bad idea to replace valves/springs without doing work to the bottom end but would replacing the lifters pose any problems? BTW, its a 98 with a 4.6. 165k miles on it.
