Default heater core???

Ok im pretty sure my problem is my heater core but im hoping someone has a little more incite to let me know that is something simpler that that.

I started my 2001 f-150 4.6 truck and turned my heater on defrost and a strong smell of antifreeze filled my cab and my window slowly started to fog up from the inside. Someone please tell me im wrong and its just a loose screw or something. Reading my Haynes manual really didnt help either, i have to take the whole dash out and discharge my a/c. ANY SUGUESTON WILL

You do have to pull the instrument panel back to do it but the A/C doesn't have to be discharged.
